10 Seconds at a Time: Making a short film with Sora

Still from short film Black Slime

What happens when you try to make a short film entirely out of AI-generated 10-second clips? I decided to find out.

This piece started as an experiment for Runway’s AI Film Festival: visuals generated in Sora, sound and music by my friend and collaborator Martin Cox. The goal? Build a moody little sci-fi moment—an astronaut, a mysterious black substance, and a descent into something… weird.

It turns out, Sora has both range and rough edges. Stitching together short bursts into something cohesive is trickier than I hoped—but it was also fascinating. The limitations forced some creative problem-solving, and the music really helped pull it all together.

Is it perfect? Nope. But it was a blast to make, and it pushed my thinking on what’s possible (and what’s not quite there yet) with AI-generated video. Check it out below—and if you’ve tried anything similar, I’d love to see it.

Below are some great concept shots and seed images generated in ChatGPT and used to create the film.
